Propagation

Chelsey, Chanelle, and Emma

Objectives:

  • to explore different types of vegetative propagation in plants
  • to compare methods of vegetative propagation and determine which is more effective

Stem and Leaf Cutting - Goldfish Plant (in water first vs directly in soil)

Procedure:
  • When planting the goldfish plant in soil we just put some moist soil in a dish and cut a piece off the stem and planted it in the soil. and put it over by the window When we planted into the water we cut a piece of the stem again and had a plastic cup with a little water in it, dipped the end of the stem in rooting hormone and put it in the cup of water. Then set the cup under the uv light
Observations & Results:
  • keep track of what happens using photos and written observations
  • The goldfish plant in the water we noticed that it grew roots, the one in the soil we haven't noticed any change yet.
Conclusion:
  • It's slow but the time they grow all new roots it takes longer but it's not dying. the one that was in the water it doing a little bit better it's more green, then the one that was in the soil the whole time.

Stem and Leaf Cutting - coleus  (in water first vs directly in soil)

Procedure:
  • We chose a plant and cut two pieces of the stem off and planted one in soil. the other stem we put into a plastic cup with water and dipped it into rooting hormone.
Observations & Results:
  • The one in the soil we noticed has started to grow and get bigger. the one in the water and rooting hormone we noticed is growing roots.
Conclusion:
  • They are bot about the same the one from the water that is now in the soil is a little taller but not much taller as the one that was in the soil from the beginning.

This is the coleus that was in water then soil. It is growing new leaves off the stem. At first when I put it into a self watering pot I would have to fill it everyday for the first week because it was dry and getting used to the new soil that it had to grow new roots in.

 Leaf Cutting - Christmas Cactus

Procedure:
  • write the steps that you took (put pictures where possible!)
  • For this cutting we planted it into moist soil in a dish.
Observations & Results:
  • keep track of what happens using photos and written observations
  • So far we have not noticed any changes with the Christmas cactus.
  • Grew some roots

This is the Christmas Cactus in it's pot. It's slowing growing but I seen roots before I put it in so I hope it will grow. I also researched a little bit of information about the Christmas Cactus and apparently it should have any light/sunlight during the month of October for it to bloom by Christmas.

Leaf Cutting - Aloe Vera Plant

Procedure:
  • we cut the aloe vera plant with scissors and set it on paper towel for the night to dry out. The next day we had a plastic cup with holes in the bottom. We then made the soil moist dipped the aloe vera plant in rooting hormone and put the plant in the soil. After that we just put the plant under the UV light
Observations & Results:
  • It's growing roots and getting taller. The height only changed a little bit.
Eye Cutting - Potato

Procedure:
We took a milk carton and filled it with wet soil, we made a hole in the soil for the potato would fit in. We put soil over it and we put soil lightly on the potato rather then having the soil tightly around the potato so it would grow better.
Observations & Results:
It may be two weeks or more before we see anything change but we have been watering the soil so the potato will actually grow.

Runner Propagation - Spider Plant

Procedure:

  • we took a plastic cup put just a little bit of water we cut a piece of the spider plant stem with a pair scissors then put in it the water and placed it under the UV light.
  • Observations & Results:
  • It is growing some roots on it

This is the spider plant, it's surprising how much it grew since it was in the new pot. I try to water it 3-5 times a week, depending how dry the soil is and how warm it is.
